Getting Indexed: How to Add a URL to Search Engines

Sunday, October 7, 2012

So why is it necessary to add URL to search engines? Because it will help you get indexed faster; otherwise your site cannot be found online by any one. There is no point having great content with affiliate links and Google AdSense if the Internet is not aware of its existence.
While over time if new content is regularly added, search engine "spiders" will eventually find your site. You can, however, manually add URL to search engines to help speed up the process.
It is important distinguish the difference between getting indexed and getting traffic. To add URL to search engines helps you to get indexed by alerting the "spiders" to crawl your site. You need to promote your website, increase the back links so to get ranked higher in searches in order to get traffic.
You only need to add URL to Google, Yahoo! and Bing which are the top three, and together account for some 95% of the market. Also, many others like Lycos and Alta Vista use Google and Yahoo to power their search, so there really is no need to submit to these sites. While there are paid services you can use, there is no need as you can add URL to search engines (like Google, Bing and Yahoo!) for free. You will be wasting your money and potentially risk your email address from being spammed with offers from these other directories.
Most search engines require a form to be filled to submit your website. Generally, only information about the site and URL for the front page is required. You then submit your page by pressing the "Add URL" link at the bottom. Furthermore, you can also submit your website's site map (a page with links to all the web pages on your website) as this helps the spiders find all your content. Spiders follow links from that page to the rest of your website.
To successfully get your site indexed, it is important to remember the following:
  • Do not submit similar or mirror sites (sites that have different URLs but identical content). Repetitive content are not helpful to users of the directory. Multiple submissions may result in a site being deleted or excluded.
  • Only submit your main index page:The spider/robot will automatically find all the links within the pages and index your whole site.
  • No re-Directs: Do not submit any URL which redirects to another address.
